UWIC CPPD Widening Access courses 2011:
Creative Writing for Fun (10 sessions).

Gabalfa Community Centre, Cardiff.
Starting Tuesday 1 March 2011.

The aim of the course is to simply have fun with being creative, to make the process of writing accessible to all types of people, regardless of gender, age or culture. It is an accessible course that aims to inspire and provide a starting point for people to discover and develop their interests and talents. Via a series of writing exercises that literally get the creative juices flowing, we will explore examples of creative writing, find out what inspires the students and hopefully provide inspiration from the selected pieces and personal experiences.

By the end of the course you will have produced you own unique piece of writing, which will be printed and presented together with all the students work to form a book.

This course is free of charge.

Healthy, Wealthy and Wise: Cardiff Eisteddfod for the 50+.

This competition has free entry and is open to the public for viewing. The categories are Music, Needlecraft, Literature and Art.

Entries are restricted to Cardiff residents who are 50 by Thursday 3 march 2011 or non residents who are members of any Age Concern project.

Entrants may only submit 1 item per section number in each category.

Breast Cancer Care: Living with Secondary Breast Cancer Course (day 2 of 2).

Living with secondary breast cancer If you would like to meet other women with secondary breast cancer and gain relevant information and support, our free two-day course in Cardiff is for you. Breast Cancer Care is here for anyone affected by Breast Cancer.

We bring people together, provide information and support, and campaign for improved standards of care. We use our understanding of people's experience of breast cancer and our clinical expertise in everything we do. All our services are free. This course is for anyone diagnosed with secondary breast cancer (breast cancer that has spread to another part of the body).

Mature Driver Refresher Seminar.

Cardiff Council Road Safety Centre, Crown Way,

Are you over 55 and finding driving stressful at times?

Cardiff Council's Road Safety Unit, in conjunction with the Cardiff Group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, is organising a number of FREE Mature Driver Refresher seminars to be held at the Road Safety Centre at Maindy during 2011. The seminar is designed to enable mature drivers to improve their existing practical skills and to help them cope with the growing demands of modern traffic conditions.

There are 18 places are available on each course and will be reserved on a first come, first served basis. Topics will include: the effects of speed, stopping distances, dealing with junctions and roundabouts, driver observation, accident causation, health and a fun Highway Code quiz.

Barnardo's Big 5km (& 1km kid's run).

Blackweir Fields, Bute Park, Cardiff.

Barnardo's Big 5km - a 5km family fun run - will take place in Blackweir Fields in Cardiff's Bute Park in Spring 2011.

Get fit for Spring and raise money to support the more than 100,000 vulnerable children, young people and their families who Barnardo's works with in the U.K each year.

The whole family can get involved with a 1km kids run before the main event and everyone will receive a shiny Big 5km medal for taking part!

Suggested minimum sponsorship £100.

Circles Network - Family Matters.

The event will focus on sharing stories of the issues parents face and looking at positive ways to move forward through improving parenting skills and empowering individuals. The day will involve a number of speakers, some with lived experience, of the issues disabled parents face. Workshops and activities will run throughout the day which will offer practical advice and support.

This event is free for disabled parents; including those with learning difficulties, physical difficulties or mental health issues. However there is a small fee of £15 for practitioners and support staff to help cover the cost of the event.

The Danwood Wales, George Thomas Hospice Care 5k takes place on Sunday 27 March, just about enough time to get into shape after Christmas! George Thomas Hospice Care is a South Wales charity, a major provider of specialist community palliative care to those suffering cancer and other life threatening illnesses in Cardiff.

Truth about Youth Celebration Event.

Platform 51 Cymru invites you to celebrate the Truth about Youth. The Co-operative Foundation funded Truth about Youth project works with young women and men from across Cardiff, to challenge negative perceptions of young people. We do this by supporting young people to work directly with their communities, with the media and with politicians.

The Celebration Event will highlight young people's achievements so far on the project and their positive contribution to their communities. Speakers will be Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan, AM for Cardiff West and Keith Towler, Children's Commissioner for Wales. It aims to provide you with information on keeping children safe in voluntary, community and faith group activities and to clarify your roles and responsibilities when working with children and young people.
